Stark, complex, full of fear and thrills, Feverhead is a novella to read again and again. Christie’s slow traversing the planes of death… the Man’s aching dawn as he discovers what that means… the Esse’s hisses — the background noise of the novella and a constant reminder that something else is there in the room with you.
Christie arrives (many times, in many dimensions) at the Shop’a’Lot in Johnstown in Bliss (the Earth) and then never comes home. Her boyfriend Dan discovers her abandoned car in the morning — complete with purse, wallet, phone, and boots. Her boot prints seem to arrive via the empty lot next door, where they appear in a splash of blood. The police don’t know what to do and the sleepy town sleeps on, unaware of the danger in their midst.
There are monsters. There are ghosts. There are killers lurking in the parking lot of the local grocery store. And — most of all — there are other worlds where other things peek in and poke in and determine our fates while we sleep on.
Feverhead is a fantastic finale to the Esse in Bliss series of novellas and story worth repeating and remembering… over and over.
